Philosophy of Art
Do you like to immerse yourself in the story of a book, series, or movie? Have you ever had goosebumps while listening to great music? And has something ever seemed beautiful to you? If you want to talk (and think!) about your aesthetic experiences, then you will definitely enjoy this course!
We will start with a seemingly easy question: what is art in the first place? If we manage to answer it, then in the second and third seminars, we will look for good art, but first, we must eliminate kitsch. We (or at least I) like kitsch, but many say that good art is something different. But what?
Once we eliminate kitsch, as part of our search for good art, we must clarify in the third seminar how to search for good art at all, and whether there are better and worse critics (and thus searchers) of good art.
Once we finally find good art, questions for the fourth seminar arise, namely, how or whether to interpret art at all. We will try to answer the tricky question: What did the poet mean?
Interpretation in the fifth seminar will lead us to the relationship between the author and her work. Is it necessary to know the author’s life to understand her work, or can we separate the author from the work?
In the final sixth seminar, the most socially important questions of all will be raised – is there such a thing as immoral art, and are there reasons for censoring art?
We will end the course with an open discussion where we ask ourselves: why create art at all?
The course is for anyone who loves art of any kind, who knows how to listen when others speak, and conversely, is not terrified of contributing to a mutually respectful discussion.
