THE TUTORG TEAM

WHO ARE OUR TUTORGS

The Tutorgs (short for Tutors + Organizers) are a team of volunteers standing behind the organization of the Discover Summer Academies (DSA). We are a diverse group of over 70 people that changes each academic year. We are university students, graduates, and professionals who want to pass their passion for what they do onward. Our fields, specializations, and perspectives are varied. In their active year, every  tutorg becomes a member of the Discover Association and commits to its Code of Conduct and The Core Values: The love for learning, respect for diversity, and civic engagement.

If you’ve already finished high school but our activities interest you and you want to stay actively connected with the Discover community, becoming a tutorg is the best way to make it happen!

HOW TO BECOME A TUTORG?

For most tutorg roles, we hold a traditional open call every autumn. This year, applications will be open from November 5 to December 21, 2025.

WHY BECOME A TUTORG?

THE BEST WEEK OF YOUR SUMMER

In summer you will  travel to one DSA session and create its program together with a crew of 18-20 other enthusiastic and interesting young people. You will build team friendships, inspire the younger generation, and experience a summer event in a beautiful natural location in central Europe. The Discover association provides free accommodation, meals, and reimburses travel to the session.

SOCIAL IMPACT

Do you enjoy what you do and want to share that joy? At Discover, you have the opportunity to be a role model for students who are still searching for their future direction, and thus shape the future of our countries. For many students, Discover is a pivotal moment in choosing their future school.

LEADERSHIP IN YOUR POCKET

You’ll gain new experiences and use skills you didn’t even know you had.  Whether you want to try teaching, organizing workshops or larger events, working with audiovisual media and social networks, leading an interdisciplinary team, or preparing for professional work with people, being a tutorg offers you the chance to realize your potential in a friendly environment and learn from other cool people.

ENERGY BOOST

Many of us return home with a dose of work motivation that lasts the entire academic year. Our students are motivated and curious, and conversations with them can push us forward in both our fields and lives. Tutorging is a very fulfilling experience.

AWESOME TEAM-BUILDING

You will be invited to 2 Discover-funded organizational weekend Retreats: the Spring and Autumn. They traditionally take place in March-April (before the sessions) and October (after the sessions), mostly in rural locations between Prague and Bratislava. Besides training and evaluating our programs, the retreats also serve as team-building and you’ll have tons of fun.

A LIFELONG COMMUNITY

You’ll meet peers from Czechia, Slovakia, Europe, and the whole world who share their commitment to learning and active interest in what is happening around them. You’ll hear many opinions and discover diverse ways to improve the world around you. Many of us have formed long-term friendships and continue meeting up at Discover community events and beyond.

TUTORG ROLES OVERVIEW

Tutor

You will design and lead your own course at one of the sessions. It will cover an area you know well – for example, your academic or professional field – and that you genuinely enjoy. At the same time, you actively participate in other parts of the program (i.e., Experience Game, Life Fair), work closely with other team members, and optionally take on additional roles. However, your primary responsibility is ensuring the educational aspect of DSA. About 13 to 16 tutors are needed at each session.

What does teaching at DSA involve?

  • You prepare the main theme, syllabus, teaching materials, and activities for 5-6 session days
  • During the session, you teach every morning for 90 minutes
  • 1-2 times per week in the afternoon, you also lead a one-time 45-90 minute workshop (this can also relate to hobbies or personal interests – e.g., “How to grow a micro-garden”)

You can become a tutor if:

  • You have completed at least your 3rd year of university/college OR you are at least 22 years old with relevant work or life experience
  • In your application you demonstrate that you are qualified to teach your chosen course
  • You show potential to enrich the DSA program beyond the academic part (through your range of interests, enthusiasm, hobbies, skills)

ORGANIZER (ORG)

You help coordinators with logistics, communication, preparation, and obtaining necessary materials for a specific session. You are always on hand and ensure the smooth running of session days. You can lead workshops or other smaller non-academic parts of the program (i.e., Experience Game, Team Game, Soulfulness). Each session needs 2 to 4 orgs.

You can become an org if:

  • You have completed high school
  • You are a team player with interest and motivation to co-create LAD
  • You can offer useful skills (i.e., photography, driving, making fire from wet wood)
  • You can enrich the session program (i e. you have hobbies, experiences)

THERAPIST & MEDIC

You take care of the mental or physical health of all the participants. Each session indispensably needs at least 1 tutorg in both roles. At the same time, you can lead a course or work as an organizer. You can apply through both applications – as Tutor or Org.

You can become a therapist if:

  • You have professional experience with therapeutic methods (i. e., psychology studies, social work, therapeutic training, therapeutic practice).

You can become a medic if:

  • Sessions in the Czech Republic: you have completed a state accredited course to work as a Health worker at recovery events (the Czech “ZZA” license or its internationally recognised equivalent, for example from a Scouting organisation ) OR successfully completed 3rd year of medical school (medicine, dentistry) OR have completed paramedic, nurse, birth or health assistant training.
  • Sessions in Slovakia: you have completed full medical school/training as a doctor, paramedic, nurse or a birth assistant.

COORDINATOR

Each LAD session is led by 2-3 coordinators. They take care of the whole tutorg team, assign tasks and oversee their progress and organization. They also plan the thematic focus of the session, communicate with Discover’s central management (V3), manage the session budget, and represent Discover to the session venue owner and the kitchen staff.

Who can become a Coordinator?

For this role, selection takes place internally from the active members of the community. Candidates are experienced Discoverians. They have already been at DSA at least once in the role of a tutor or an org and have a vision for their own session.
