Parasocial interaction & cognitive science

This course delves into the intersection of parasocial interactions, cognitive science, and brain behavior. We will explore how one-sided relationships with media personalities—whether celebrities, fictional characters, or influencers—impact the brain and emotional responses. The course aims to help students understand how parasocial relationships develop, their psychological effects, and the implications on social behavior. Additionally, we will look at how cognitive science informs our understanding of media consumption, human behavior, and identity in the context of parasocial interactions. Students will gain a foundational understanding of cognitive science while examining real-world examples of parasocial dynamics.
Block 1: Introduction to Cognitive Science and Parasocial Interaction
Overview of cognitive science and how it relates to parasocial relationships.
Block 2: Psychological Aspects of Parasocial Interaction
Exploring how parasocial interactions affect emotions and brain behavior.
Block 3: The Role of Media in Parasocial Relationships
Understanding how media platforms facilitate parasocial connections.
Block 4: Social and Cultural Implications of Parasocial Relationships
Analyzing the broader societal impacts of parasocial dynamics.
Block 5: The Neuroscience of Parasocial Interaction
Studying how the brain reacts to parasocial relationships and media figures.
Block 6: Case Studies and Applications
Real-world examples of parasocial relationships in media, fandoms, and entertainment.
This course is ideal for students interested in psychology, cognitive science, and the social effects of media. No prior knowledge of cognitive science is required, though an interest in the dynamics of human behavior and media consumption will be beneficial.
