Deep diving liver medicine

Do you know how your body distinguishes food from poison? And why exactly it is alcohol is supposed to be bad for you?

Are you curious about the answers to those questions, and do you want to know more about medical diagnostics, treatment, science, and the interplay between disease and society?

Then join us! We’ll cover a lot of ground, from the proteins and enzymes that the liver produces, to how a doctor works in clinic, and how medical science is done in practice. Furthermore, you might come away with a new perspective on policymaking and its’ effects on health on a larger scale.

During the course, we’ll firstly get to know the star of the show by going over the anatomy and basic physiology of the liver.

Thereafter, we’ll spend some sessions dissecting real cases to understand how the liver is affected by diseases, and how these are characterized, diagnosed and treated.

Following these sessions, we’ll home in on the risk factors, both diseases and lifestyles, that can lead to liver disease, and we’ll see the direct links between policymaking and health choices.

Lastly, our attention will turn towards medical science, and we’ll examine how and why medical science is done, while trying to take a small peek into the future of medicine.

Make sure to have your thinking-cap with you as the sessions will be filled with practical problems, as well as questions that both need to be thought up and answered by you!

Markus Maagaard

When walking down a busy street, Markus can’t help but wonder at the people he passes. For as long as he can remember Markus has liked people and wanted to do what he can to help those he passes on his way. This led to his fascination with the medical field and is what drives him in his master’s studies in medicine. Apace with his studies, his interest in understanding the causalities of his field has carried him into the whirling world of science where he has been part of research projects with topics ranging from computation of DNA-sequencing to better treatment of liver cirrhosis. In all the time he can remember, Markus has enjoyed reading whatever books he could get his hands on. He has fancied everything from fantasy to sci-fi to historical accounts and again to classic myths. His current literary project is getting through the works of Homer with his book club. When time calls for him to go about something other than reading, Markus enjoys playing chess, watching Formula 1 or sitting immersed in his thoughts on his terrace. Chiefly though, Markus lives his best life in the company of others with a hot cup of chocolate, either playing board games or listening to the stories, the opinions and the going-ons of his friends.
